Two commit suicide in Kasese

Residents of Busambu village in Nyakiyumbu sub-county, Kasese district were yesterday morning treated with shock when they discovered one of their own having committed suicide.

The deceased has been identified by the area local leaders as Joseph Mumbere who whose body was discovered hanged in his own house that he stays in with his family members.

According to Mr. Johnson Ndima, the Sub-county Councilor representing Muhindi Parish, the deceased is alleged to have stolen beans belonging to a woman in Busalya village.

Ndima explained that when the owner of the said beans returned from Mpondwe market in Mpondwe – Lhubiriha Town Council, she discovered that her beans had been stolen.

She went and reported the matter to area Local Council I Chairperson but no sooner had she left  the Chairperson’s office than she was told the a section of residents that they saw Mumbere (now deceased) coming from her home carrying luggage that they suspected to be containing beans.

Last evening, the area Chairperson went to Mumbere’s home to inquire from him if the allegations slapped against him were true but unfortunately the suspect was not readily available.

It is reported that today morning, the same Chairperson, Mr. Boniface Nzirahu again thronged the suspect’s home and found Mumbere still asleep but refused to open for the village boss.

Ndima said that when Mumbere failed to open the door, his children attempted to open but he ordered them to go back to their beds to sleep, threatening to stab them with a knife.  

After a few moments, the people who were inside the house including his wife heard something banging and upon making a thorough checkup, they found the family head having hanged himself using a rope that he had removed from a goat.

By press time at 3pm, the body of Mumbere had not yet been removed from the scene of crime and the local leaders were still waiting for police to arrive and advise the residents on the next course of action.

In a related development, an 11 year-old boy has this evening committed suicide in Kisagazi Cell, Nyamwamba Division in Kasese Municipality.
