The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development has assured the citizens that it will cancel all illegal land titles as one of the ways of reorganizing the land registration system and fighting for the rights of people whose pieces of land could have been grabbed in the due process.
The assurance was made on Friday evening by the Ministry’s Minister of State, Hon. Harriet Ntabaazi during the closure of the Land Awareness Week in the Rwenzori region, a function that was held in Kasese District.
Hon. Ntabaazi noted that there was a public outcry about the people who had allegedly grabbed land and processed titles, leaving their real owners homeless and without where to establish some development projects.
She assured them that the Ministry was looking forward to cancelling all the faked land titles so as to bring sanity and justice to the real owners, who have frequently complained about the matter.
The Minister also cautioned officers in the land department against facilitating the process of grabbing land by enabling grabbers to get titles.
She directed that civil servants who have allegedly bought or settled on the government pieces of land should immediately vacate them.
The Kasese Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Sarah Ithungu Masereka Baleke, appealed to the Minister to expedite the process of opening up boundaries of the land belonging to the residents and the National Parks.
She also encouraged the people to embrace titling their pieces of land as one way of protecting them from grabbers.
