The Kasese District Lhukonzo Language Board is making strides in ensuring Lhukonzo Language is effectively taught and examined by Uganda National Examinations Board-UNEB at Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE).
Mr. William Magezi a retired teacher, author and a translator who also doubles as the Assistant General Secretary for the Kasese District Lhukonzo Language Board explains that there is a number of steps that must be followed to ensure a language is cleared by the national curriculum development centre NCDC to be taught and examined respectively.
According to him, some of the requirements include, putting in place a language orthography guide, text books, teachers guides and dictionaries and both must be submitted to the National Curriculum Development Centre for approval, a step which has since been achieved and the language is taught at primary level.
Mr. Magezi was optimistic that the board is committed to ensuring that Lhukonzo language is examined By UNEB in a period of about two years stressing that writers are working tirelessly to author secondary school text books and teachers’ guides in line with the new lower secondary school curriculum and syllabi.
Mr. Magezi appealed to teachers, especially those who handle lower primary sections to embark on following the thematic curriculum when instructing learners in order to equip them with the basic skills in knowing their mother tongues.
