Residents of Lyakirema and Nyakiyumbu Parishes in Nyakiyumbu Sub-county, Kasese District have positively welcomed the grading activities of Ndongo – Nyamighera – Kitagata road, saying that after completion, the road would facilitate the movement of farm produces and reduce the transport fares.

The road project that will cost Kasese District Local Government shillings 70 million for the first phase, will be funded under the Annual Road Maintenance Grant.

Today morning, the residents expressed gratitude to Kasese District Local Government during an official launch of the groundbreaking and grading activities of the said road at Lyakirema Trading Centre.

The Lyakirema II Village Chairperson, Samson Kule Kikwaya, noted that the mentioned road had become impassable, thus threatening the lives and security in the area.

According to him, the road was last worked on 15 years ago, saying its grading activities would increase the smooth, safe and reliable transit throughout the dry and wet seasons.

The acting Kasese District Engineer, Geoffrey Okello, who said that the road totals to seven kilometers, indicated that they would use part of the maintenance grant that is disbursed to the district annually.

Okello indicated that out of the shillings 2 billion, they had so far received shillings 500 million to work on different roads spread across the district.

He called for cooperation between the population and the implementers of the project through reporting cases of vandalism, theft of fuel and equipment if they occur.

Mr. Karim Baluku Kisembo, the Kasese District Secretary for Works, Production and Technical Services, warned the locals against carrying out brick- making activities on the roadsides, arguing that they damage the roads.

The Kasese Resident District Commissioner, Lt. Joe Walusimbi, called for value for money by the project implementers.
