The Kasese Chief Magistrate’s Court has directed the prison authorities holding the November 01, 2025 suspects accused of attacking military installations in the Rwenzori Sub-county to take who need medical attention to health facilities.
Yesterday, 102 suspects including Josephine Biira alias Nyabahasa reappeared before the Kasese Chief Magistrate’s Court, presided over by His Worship George Mfitundinda via Zoom for further mention of their treason and terrorism charges.
The trial Magistrate ordered the prison authorities at Maluku Government Prison to take the sickly suspects to health facilities around Mbale District to allow them access better health care and attention.
The court’s order followed a prayer by the Counsel for some of the accused persons, Barnabas Tinkasiimire from Victoria and Co. Advocates who told court that he recently visited his clients and heard a one-on- one conversation with them.
According to him, some of the accused persons showed him healing bruises and scars alleging to have been tortured by the military upon arrest.
Another defense lawyer, Luke Kanyonyi from Kanyonyi and Co. Advocates concurred with Tinkasiimire, stating that his client accused number 9 Dickson Mbusa has not been allowed to access medical care yet he was due for operation prior to his arrest, asking court to grant him permission to access the same.
He asked court to instead order for the transfer of the suspects to prisons with better health facilities.
Prosecution led by the Resident State Attorney, Learned Counsel Godfrey Oundo, had no objection on the defense lawyers’ submissions noting that health matters are crucial and a fundamental human right to all.
Court instead ordered the prison Authorities in Mbale where most of the male suspects are being held to ensure that they access better health care within the district and further remanded them to Luzira and Maluku Government Prisons respectively until May 13, 2026 for further mention of their charges.
