Land claimants in Kasese dismayed by the alleged delay by the local leaders to open up boundaries of their contested pieces of land

BY MATHIUS KAHUNU

Land claimants currently encamped at the Kasese Resident District Commissioner’s Office have expressed dissatisfaction over the alleged delay by the relevant authorities in Kasese to open up the boundaries of their contested pieces of land.

On June 11, this year, the Minister of State for Lands, Dr. Sam Mayanja visited Kasese district to give some light about the progress of the boundary opening exercise so that the land conflicts are brought to an end.

The Minister assured the claimants that the government would immediately dispatch a team of Surveyors to preside over the boundary opening exercise so that land titles are processed to be issued to the claimants within a period of three months.

Today afternoon, the claimants staged a peaceful demonstration over the alleged delay in the implementation of the Minister’s directive, arguing that the period that the Minister promised them was about to elapse but nothing has been seen on ground.

The protesters were seen carrying placards written on, “President Museveni intervene in Kasese prolonged land issues while others were written on, “Peaceful demonstration, RDC Walusimbi should go away from Kasese. Another had words written on, “Peaceful demonstration against the transfer of the Deputy RDC Zepher Mubingwa.”

Ms Grace Biira, the Chairperson of the Land Claimants attributed the said delay of the boundary opening to the relevant authorities in Kasese district who according to her have allegedly declined to execute their duties so that the matter is solved amicably.

She observed the need for an urgent solution into the matter, arguing that it might become a security threat as wrong elements might take it as an advantage for them to lure the redundant and energetic youth living in the camp into criminal activities.

Responding to their concerns, the Kasese RDC, Lt. Joe Walusimbi asked the land claimants to remain patient as the government works towards solving their issues through taking the necessary steps geared towards their resettlement.

He clarified that the transfer of the Deputy RDC in-charge of Busongora County, Mr. Zepher Mubingwa who has been sent to Terego district has nothing with affecting the process of resettling the claimants.
