BY ISAAC MUMBERE

The Kasese District Chairperson, Mr. Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi has pleaded with the Central Government to expedite the process of constructing and tarmacking Nkenda – Nyakalingijjo – Muhunga road in an attempt to boost some tourism activities in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

The District Boss sounded the remarks yesterday while speaking to officials from the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities who had thronged Ibanda – Kyanya Town Council for the official handover of a 10.7 billion shillings project to Muhindo John and Friends Ltd meant to construct boardwalks in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.

Mr. Muhindi noted that government has repeatedly pledged to construct the said road but in vain.

He stressed that being in a bad state; the road does not give a comfort drive to the tourists who visit the Park.

According to him, once the road is worked upon, it would boost the tourism sector and act as an opportunity to the communities living around the park to establish some income generating projects.

Earlier, the Ibanda –Kyanya Town Council Chairperson, Mr. Modesto Bwambale Kanekerya had decried the poor state of the same road, adding that once it is considered, it would help to increase the local revenue collections of the Urban Centre.

In his response, Mr. Samuel Kakula Kirome, the Under Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, acknowledged that government had severally pledged to construct the road in the past Financial Years.

He, however, assured the District Boss that his Ministry would convince Central Government to prioritize the construction of Nkenda – Nyakalingijjo – Muhunga road since it has invested shillings 10.7 billion in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park.
