Anesthetists in Kasese decry alleged lack of facilitation and motivation by government

BY JOACKIM KULE

Anesthetists in Kasese district have decried the alleged lack of facilitation and motivation by government at their places of work.

Anesthetists are specialist doctors who are responsible for providing anesthesia (medication) to patients for operations and procedures. In addition, anesthetists have a range of practice which extends beyond anesthesia for surgery to include pain management and intensive care.

They sounded the remarks today during their refresher training that was held at the Mayor’s Boardroom in Kasese town. The training was however targeting Medical Doctors, Midwives and Anesthetists.

Mr. Yosoni Baluku Bitamazire, an Anesthetic Officer at Kilembe Mines Hospital who was the team leader for the participants indicated during the training that their efforts are sometimes not recognized by some health facilities from where they work.

According to him, they are not facilitated in terms of transport and accommodation as well as motivated in terms of promotion.

Mr. Baluku, who was addressing the Kasese Municipal Deputy Town Clerk, also cited that there was another challenge of low staffing of anesthetists at most health facilities, something that makes their work so tiresome.

Mr. Zedekiya Kambasu Kayiri, the Municipal Deputy Town Clerk regretted the incident and quickly said the anesthetists could have been left due to lack of advocacy from their supervisors.

Kayiri directed the Medical Officer of Health to be including the concerns of such people in her reports during the budgetary process.

Dr. Joy Muhindo, the Kasese Municipal Medical Officer of Health, however, applauded the anesthetists for their tremendous work towards caring for the lives of the population.

Sr. Angelica Kisembo, the Senior Nursing Officer at Kilembe Mines Hospital who was representing the District Health Officer at the workshop urged her fellow workers to develop the spirit of team work.

Great thanks for the tremendous work done by the anaesthetists.
There is need for continued government support and recruitment of more anaesthetists in our health facilities.
