Hailstorms hit Kabatunda-Kirabaho Town Council, Kasese

Farmers in Kirabaho Ward of Kabatunda-Kirabaho Town Council in Kasese District are counting losses after a heavy down pour that hit the area destroyed their both cash and food crops.

The incident happened last evening when the rains associated with hailstorms hit the gardens, causing the farmers’ crops to be destroyed.

Oliver Kabugho, the Woman Councilor representing Kirabaho Ward confirms the incident, arguing that many farmers have lost crops.

She explains that among many other crops, the farmers have lost cassava, banana, coffee and cocoa.

She appeals to the district leaders especially those concerned with the disaster management to go to the area and asses the magnitude of the catastrophe to the livelihoods of the people.

Kabugho who a former Secretary for Production and Marketing also regrets that the similar challenges were witnessed in April when they lost crops to the hailstorms.

Kabugho also reported that the farmers are facing challenge related to thefts of food crops from the farmers gardens, domestic animals and poultry.

Kasese District Principal Assistant Secretary, Mr. Mustafa Kikusa who doubles as the Disaster Management Committee chairperson regretted the incident, noting that the area suffered repeated incidents in a shorter period of time.

He called on the agricultural officers, Town Agents and the Town Clerk in the affected the area to go to the ground and compile an assessment report, which inform the district for an onward planning. ENDS
