The Police in Rwenzori East Policing Region, Kasese district have revealed details surrounding the death of a senior two student at Bwera Secondary School in Mpondwe- Lhubiriha Town Council.
The Acting Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Luka Mbusa says investigations indicate that Desmond Masereka Katya died due to suffocation. According to him, the incident was caused by smoke from a charcoal that the victim (now deceased) was using to prepare food for supper.
SP Mbusa says at around 11:30pm last night, a one Rev. Opolot Yozephano saw smoke coming from his neighbor’s house, Mr. Greyford Katya, the father of the deceased and informed other neighbors who immediately responded to the incident and broke the door.
After successfully breaking the door, they observed that the victim who was in the room alone by the time of the incident was lying lifelessly on his father’s bed.
SP Mbusa adds that the body was retrieved and taken to Bwera Government General Hospital for a postmortem examination while a suspected case of arson was registered at Bwera Police Station under SD Ref 03/20/11/2023.
A press statement from the Management of Bwera Secondary School and signed by the School’s Head teacher, Mr. Jokonia Bwambale indicates that the boy (victim) has been staying in the staff quarters with his father, Mr. Greyford Katya, the Director of Studies at the institution.
The statement also adds that by the time of the incident, the father had gone home for a weekend and left the victim in the house alone.
The deceased’s body will be buried tomorrow at Katadoba in Kasese Municipality. ENDS
