Kasese District Local government has revealed plans to include sports in her annual budget as means of developing talent and enhance performance of local athletes in the tusker lite Mt. Rwenzori Marathon.
Mr. Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi the Kasese District LC5 chairperson says as the marathon continues to gain momentum, there is need to forge a way of supporting the local athletes through organizing them as teams that would vigorously train in order to favorably compete with their counterparts from the rest of the world.
It is upon that point of view that the district boss revealed that they have since planned to include the concept of sports in the next financial year’s district budget in order to support local athletes.
He, however, asked the youth to also organize themselves as small teams that would act as their platforms to lobby for development funds from the government through the youth livelihood program, the parish development model and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Program (UWEP).
The district boss cautioned the young people against drug abuse that would not only ruin their health but also affect their performance in sportS.
Meanwhile, the second deputy prime minister who also doubles as the Bukonzo County West Member of parliament, Dr. Chrispus Walter Kiyonga rallied all Members of parliament to join efforts and devise means of sponsoring the local athletes.
He observed the need to train and groom young in sports right away from a tender age.
Innocent Muhindo Kabatoro the Kasese Municipality athletes’ team captain attributed poor performance of the local athletes in marathon to insufficient training brought about by insufficient financial and logistical support.
