Wilson Ngene, the Rwenzori Regional Coordinator for Emyooga has revealed that the people who have defaulted in recovering the programme funds in Kasese District risk being imprisoned.
Emyooga is a presidential initiative in Uganda launched in August 2019 to promote wealth and job creation.
Ngene says they have launched a second phase of using force to recover the funds from individuals who took them but have delayed to pay back.
Speaking to our reporter in an exclusive interview yesterday morning, Ngene indicated that majority of the beneficiaries had not paid back, hence frustrating the process of other people benefiting from the programme.
According to Ngene, most SACCOs have not received the second phase because of a low recovery rate. This, according to him has forced the concerned officials to launch another operation where defaulters will be forced to either pay back or face imprisonment if they fail to pay.
Ngene stressed that all the100 SACCOs of the Emyooga Programme received shillings 30 million each at the initial stage as start -up capital but only 63 of them have benefited from the second phase with shillings 20 million each. 20 SACCO groups are also reported to have benefited from phase 3.
He uses the same opportunity to encourage the people who have not benefited from the program to join the existing SACCOs in order to get capital to invest and improve their livelihoods.
