Kasese District Health Authorities have revealed that at least 18% of the population is still practicing open defecation.
The District Assistant Health Officer in-charge of Environmental Health, Mr. Stephen Bagonza, says currently the latrine coverage across the Local Government is standing only at 82%, leaving the 18% vulnerable to diseases related to the challenges.
According to Mr. Bagonza, because of some communities still using open defecation, chances of contracting diseases including cholera are high.
Bagonza explains that about 82% of the diseases that people are grappling with are related to poor sanitation and hygiene among the communities.
He also encourages the people to embrace boiling drinking water and protecting water sources from contamination.
He, however, stresses that the district still has gaps in terms of safe water coverage which stands at 56%.
The Environmental Health Officer, emphasizes handwashing and the use of clean domestic utensils among others.
