Rwenzururu Kingdom cautions subjects against hate speech

BYJOACKIM KULE

Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu has cautioned her subjects against engaging in hate speech which has potential to plunge the community into a spiral of violence.

Rwenzururu Kingdom spokesperson Rt Hon Benson Kule Baritazaale says he is alive to statements that have potential to sow seeds of discord that have been roaming on social media for the last few days including those targeting the Rwenzururu cultural leader.

Rt Hon Baritazaale says some of them stem from the failure to appreciate the difference between Kirindi in Harugale sub-county of Kasese district as an ancestral and private estate of the Masanduku family from which Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere is born and the officially designated premises of the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu as a cultural institution, most of which are in Kasese.

Addressing journalists today, the premier cautioned members of the public against using social media to brew tensions and sow seeds of discord in the population and loyal members of the cultural institution.

Rt. Hon. Baritazale appealed to the kingdom’s loyalists, cultural leaders and political actors to exercise respect for one another even when differences of opinion exist, adding that disagreements should be addressed through dialogue, established cultural structures and lawful channels instead of hurling insults, threats, intimidations and spreading propaganda most of which cannot pass the test of legal examination.

The Kingdom’s Premier also asked the public to accord maximum respect to His Majesty Omusinga Charles Wesley Mumbere Irema-ngoma, the cultural leader of the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu.

According to him, Omusinga represents the unity, dignity, heritage and inspirations of the people of Rwenzori region, noting that that derogatory, abusive or defamatory statements directed to Omusinga, members of the royal family and the kingdom officials were not acceptable because they undermine the values of peace, unity and reconciliation that the kingdom continues to promote.
