The Kasese District Returning Officer, Godffrey Mbabazi, has reported that Thursday’s Women’s Council elections in the district were conducted peacefully and without major incidents.
Addressing the media at his office, Mbabazi said that by press time his office had not received any formal complaints from candidates or voters.
He used the opportunity to call on community members to turn up in big numbers for the Village LCI elections scheduled for next week.
Mbabazi also urged residents to value grassroots elections saying that Community members should always embrace such grassroots elections since these are the leaders who handle local administration.
However, Hon. Robert Centenary, former MP for Kasese Municipality, who was at the polling exercise especially Kirembe Primary school appreciated women’s participation raised concerns about intimidation and voter bribery.
Hon. Centenary told media that his office had reports of people who intimidated FDC candidates and others who were giving out money at polling stations.
The outgoing Kasese District Chairperson Women’s Council, Ms. Angela Birungi said the office plays a key role in community welfare for both women and children affairs and health campaigns among others.
