Crackdown on Illegal Structures Commences in Kasese Municipality

BY JONAN MUZIGIT

Kasese Municipal Council Authorities have today started the crackdown on illegal structures following the implementation of the Building Control Amendment Act, 2026, which came into effect on March 19, 2026.

According to the Municipal Deputy Town Clerk, Zedekiya Kambasu Kayiri, the authorities are targeting buildings constructed without approved plans, those built in road reserves and temporary structures such as kiosks and containers.

During the inspection exercise, Kayiri, however, commended the business community for adhering to the directives by removing their kiosks before force is applied.

The move has, however, left thousands of traders stranded with their merchandise as they were ordered to vacate the premises where they operate from.

The traders who spoke to Messiah Radio said whereas the government was doing a good job, it should have given them enough time to sort themselves.

The Building Control Amendment Act, 2026, gives local building committees stronger and direct power to order and carry out the demolition of substandard or unpermitted buildings with increased penalties for the offenders.

The law aims at strengthening Uganda’s Building Sector, imposing strict penalties for illegal construction, such as fines of 1–2 currency points per square meter or up to 12 years in prison for negligence.
