The South Rwenzori Diocesan Bishop the Rt. Rev. Nason Baluku has called upon the authorities at Kasese Municipal Council and Kasese District Local government to lay stringent measures aimed at protecting green belts and all pieces of land earmarked as forest reserves and woodlots.
The bishop expressed concern that some of the pieces of land like one at the Rwenzururu kingdom Royal Hill in Basecamp upper cell which he said is being used as a stone and marram quarry instead of serving its intended purpose.
He observed the need for leaders to intervene and put stringent measures aimed at conserving nature and protecting the environment.
He sounded the appeal shortly after presiding over the launch of a tree planting campaign at St. James Basecamp Church of Uganda Parish under “Greening Kasese for Future Generations’’ a newly created community Based organization whose main focus is tree planting growing across Kasese District.
The bishop was optimistic that South Rwenzori Diocese would remain committed towards realizing her objective of contributing to nature conservation as stipulated in her 10-year strategic development plan.
Lay Canon Barnabas Bwambale Bamusede, the leader Of Greening Kasese for Future Generations explained their will solely focus on pooling efforts to address the effects of global warming, and restoring the degraded eco-system within the Kasese.
According to him, they chose to launch the tree planting and growing crusade at St. James Basecamp Church of Uganda following the bishop’s appeal to all churches within the diocese to at least have one woodlot before re-echoing the need for corporate entities to also support the initiative to make Kasese greener.
