Religious leaders in the entire Kasese District have been called upon to emphasize the message of hard work and financial literacy among the people as one of the mechanisms of eliminating criminality in the communities.
The call was sounded today by the Rwenzori East Police Community Liaisons Officer, SP Thomas Kamusiime while speaking to the members of the Rwenzori Full Gospel Church Sacco, during their 6th Annual General Meeting held at the Kasese Multipurpose Social Hall in Rukoki.
SP Kamusiime explained that criminality increases in the district because largely the communities have idle people who end up in engaging in anti-social behaviour including drug abuse, theft and burglary.
Kamusiime opines that if religious institutions keep establishing development-focused initiatives, it will go a long way in not only reducing the rate of criminality but also fostering socio-economic transformation.
Earlier in his remarks, the Officer in-Charge of Mubuku Government Prison, SP Ronald Ahimbisibwe had indicated that out of the 820 inmates at the prison, majority are sentenced for civil cases arising out of failure to manage their debts. He encouraged the church leaders to champion the fight against financial illiteracy so as to inform the investment decisions that people make.
Mrs. Rebecca Muhindo Lumika, the Rwenzori Full Gospel Church Sacco Board Chairperson, urged people to only take loans with clear strategy on how to service them so that the loans acquired don’t become a burden but rather a boost to support investment.
Rwenzori Full Gospel Church Sacco Manager, Mr Wilson Magezi told the members that the Sacco remains committed to its values and grand vision which is to support Christians get out of poverty. ENDS
