Mariam Biira is a 27-year-old resident of Kambukamabwe Cell in Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Council, Bukonzo County West in Kasese District who depends on causal labor that is not worth enabling her to meet the economic demands of her family.
Biira, whose daily income generating activity is washing clothes for the neighbors in the community, cares for about three children, aged 10, 4 and 1, a load that surpasses the income she earns.
She explains that for the last two years, she has been moving around the doors of the neighbors, asking for whoever could be having clothes that need to be washed so that she can do it for the purpose of getting what to feed her children.
Whereas the activity has facilitated her survival, Biira has come out to speak to media, noting she decided to inform the general public about the challenges that she goes through so that they can see if they can support her to grow her livelihood.
According to her, the work that she is doing has become tiresome and without a reasonable payment.
She is now calling upon the government and well-wishers to come to her rescue and empower her with the financial or material support that she can use to generate money for an improved livelihood.
Asked why she chose washing for the neighbors as a career among many other things, Biira didn’t hide to disclose that she was inspired by a fellow woman that she stayed with at the same building.
Biira’s social media post has attracted the attention of the Members of World Wide Bakonzo United Tik -Tokers’ Association who are calling on the public to accord the victim support.
Mebras Masika, commonly known as Mama Kash who also doubles as the Treasurer of the Association says that when they saw a video trending on social media platforms, they resolved to constitute a pledge sheet for Biira so that whoever feels touched by her story can render in support.
