Communities in Kasese District have been urged to embrace a shared responsibility towards addressing improper disposal of plastic waste and link it to the recycling channels in a bid to mitigate their continuous leakage in the environment.
The advice was sounded on Thursday afternoon by the Director for Cahaba Eco Crew, Mr. Badru Mugisha during the official Launch of a PET plastic bottle collection centre in Kasese Town.
The pet collection centre was established at Nyakatonzi Cell, Town Centre Ward of the Central Division in KaseseMunicipality by Crown Beverages Limited in partnership with Cahaba Eco Crew with an aim of strengthening Plastic Waste Management Systems and ensure circular use and recovery.
Mr. Mugisha emphasized the need for a shared responsibility by the consumers of bottled drinks to ensure proper disposal of plastic waste, affirming that turning plastic waste from being a burden into a resource is a collective effort required from every member of the community.
He added that the establishment of the hub would not only create an impact to the environment but also contribute to the financial gain of the community since collection of the bottles would come along with some modest cost.
Ms. Elisabeth Pearl Kitimbo, the Brand and Communications Manager at Crown Beverages, revealed that the approaches to recover the used pet plastic bottles are meant to ensure the preservation of a safer future environment which is an obligation to the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility.
The Kasese Municipal Principal Health Inspector, Mr. Christopher Albert Kabagambe who hailed Crown beverages for the initiative welcomed the project, stressing thatit would assist in reducing plastics that always block the drainage channels and partly contribute to floods.
