Residents in Kasese District have been urged to embrace installing lightening arresters as one of the approaches against disasters that result from rainfall that the district experiences annually.
The advice follows a circular from the Ministry of Water and Environment to the District Disaster Management Committee indicating that the rains that are yet to begin are anticipated to be associated with lightning and thunder.
The Kasese District Senior Planner, Joseph Singoma who also doubles as the Secretary for the Disaster Management Committee says that the rains are expected to begin slowly within this month but increase at the beginning of April.
Singoma told our reporter today afternoon at his office in Rukoki that as one of the mechanisms to prevent lightning and thunder from causing havoc to the people’s lives, they need to install arresters around their homesteads.
He also cautions the parents against allowing their children play from outside whenever it is raining, crossing rivers and seeking shelter under trees.
Singoma also notes that the anticipated rains would cause running waters which can lead to floods especially in the low land communities.
He reminds the people to de-silt some of the water drainage channels early enough so that the running waters are not diverted to the people’s residences and institutions.
He, however, stresses that the rains would be suitable for crop growing fish farming and animal rearing where pastures are expected to be vegetative.
