The Ugandan Electoral Commission has embarked on the exercise of nominating candidates for the forthcoming general elections 2026.
The independent body started the exercise today morning with the nomination of candidates for the positions of Local Council V Chairpersons and their councilors at district levels, an activity that will last for three days.
For Kasese, the nomination exercise that was held at the district multipurpose hall in Nyamwamba Division started at 10am with a briefing session of candidates, supporters, nominees, seconders and proposers of each interested participant.
In his briefing to the candidates, the Kasese District Returning Officer, Godfrey Mbabazi, noted that they were only allowing candidates who had appeared for verification with their proposers and seconders in order to ascertain if those people’s details correspond with those in the national voters’ register.
He also put it clear that they were also considering the official endorsements of the leaders of political parties for the candidates who have been sponsored and fronted as flag bearers.
Speaking to the press shortly after their nominations, most of the candidates pledged effective services delivery to their electorate once elected in the forthcoming elections.
Janet Masika Owa Jingo, who wants to represent the people of Lake-Katwe sub -county and Katwe –Kabatoro Town Council in the District Council stressed that she was determined to lobbying the government to offer socio-economic programs to the people in her elective area.
Bernard Masereka, who is seeking re-election for the position of District Councillor representing Ibanda –Kyanya Town Council revealed that there were many other projects that he had lobbied and are still in the pipeline.
According to him, seeking re-election would give him a lee way for him to make a follow -up on such projects that he has knowledge about.
Jeremiah Bwambale Bwanandeke, the incumbent District Councillor representing Mahango Sub- County, stressed that he was determined to lobbying for the construction of enough buildings atinstitutions of learning so that they attract the learners to stay in schools and complete their preferred levels of education.
Mr. Gliyedi Baluku, who wants to represent Maliba Sub- County said has always had a lot of gaps in the District Council since the one who was elected in the current political term secured a government job leaving the lower local government unrepresented.
Elizabeth Kabugho Batsotsi, who was nominated for the position of Woman District Councillor representing Kyondo sub-county, put her focus on promoting education for all children irrespective of their gender.
