Cattle keepers in Kasese who intentionally graze their livestock from the farmers’ crop gardens risk facing the law

BY MATHIUS KAHUNGU

Sub-county and Town Council Chairpersons in Kasese district have called for serious punishments to be given to some pastoralists who intentionally graze their livestock from the farmers’ crop gardens.

The political leaders sounded the remarks on Wednesday afternoon during their G44 association meeting that was held at Ruboni Community Camp in Ibanda – Kyanya Town Council.

Mr. Peter Sunday Kakule, the Nyakiyumbu Sub-county Chairperson who also doubles as the Chairperson for the G8 in Bukonzo County West stressed that for long, the farmers in his area of jurisdiction especially those from Kitaturwa, Rwehingo and Kathikali villages have been encountering losses due to the destruction caused by the pastoralists’ cattle.

He appealed to his fellow leaders to join hands and come up with by-laws that would punish the culprits who according to him graze with impunity thinking that they were above the law.

His Kyondo Sub-county counterpart, Mr. Jovenal Muke who is also the Chairperson for the G10 in Bukonzo County East reported that the frequent destruction of crops by the pastoralists’ cattle causes a threat both to human and food security.

Mr. Martin Safari, the Central Division Chairperson in Kasese Municipality, who also doubles as the Chairperson for the G44 in Kasese district guided the affected political leaders to use the existing laws to seek redress.  He directed them to compile reports and submit them to the RDC for action.
