Increased cases of people committing suicide have been reported in Kitholhu Sub-county, Bukonzo County West in Kasese district.
The Sub-county Chairperson, Mr. Emmanuel Kule Maliba says due to an increase in the number of suicidal cases, religious and cultural leaders should interest themselves in indentifying the causes as well as coming up with a solution to the vice.
Mr. Maliba explains after the celebrations to mark this New Year, one person committed suicide while five others are allegedly threatening to end their lives hence a need to the religious and cultural leaders to investigate the matter and advise the residents accordingly.
He also decries the cases of mob justice in the area. A case in point according to him is the recent incident in which angry residents demolished a house belonging to one of their own on allegations of practicing witchcraft.
He says just within this month, three cases of people accusing their colleagues of practicing witchcraft have so far been registered.
The Rwenzori East Regional Community Liaisons Officer, SP Luke Mbusa stresses that they are also concerned about the increasing number of suicidal cases across the district, appealing to the community members to reinstate the culture of holding family meetings involving the Aunts and Uncles so that they play their roles of advising the children.
He also warns the people against the practice of acquiring multiple loans and getting involved in alcoholism, saying they might be some of the drivers forcing people to commit suicide.
