The exercise of updating the National Voters’ Register today entered the second day with a low turn-up of voters reported in some parts of Kasese district.
The Electoral Commission yesterday started the exercise in preparation for the 2025- 2026 General Elections.
The 20- day exercise is being conducted at the update stations in each parish throughout the country every day, including weekends.
According to the program, the exercise will see eligible citizens registered while registered voters wishing to transfer to new voting locations will be able to apply for such transfers and the registration details of the voters will be confirmed, among other activities.
Today morning, a team of reporters from South Rwenzori Messiah Radio visited some update stations both within and outside Kasese Municipality and observed that the turn –up of eligible voters was still low.
At Kitooro Cell L. C I Office in Nyakasanga II Ward, Nyamwamba Division where the exercise is taking place, our reporters observed that by 10:30am, the update official had only worked on five people.
At Nyamwamba Division headquarters, despite the turn-up being promising, the people were complaining of the allegedly inadequate machinery at the site which subsequently caused delay.
Mr. Isaiah Thembo, the L. C I Chairperson for Kitooro Cell and Isaac Masereka, an official from the National Identification and Registration Authority have since called upon the general public to embrace the exercise so that they become eligible to participate in the forthcoming General elections.
In Kagando Ward, Kisinga Town Council, our reporter managed to talk to the local authorities who responded that they were wondering whether the work would be completed within the stipulated time arguing that they had not yet received the materials to use.
Mr. Tom Bwambale, the Local Council I Chairperson for Kagando I Cell and Moses Kunahimbire, the Chairperson for Kagando Ward revealed that the delay in receiving the required materials had made them speechless.
They, however, said they would begin the work as soon as they receive the materials.
