A section of traders in Kasese have decried the high prices of matooke and Irish potatoes across the district.
In an exclusive interview with our reporter in Kisanga market commonly known as Mawa market located in Nyamwamba Division, Kasese Municipality, the traders said Ibanda and Kilembe areas best known for producing matooke and Irish potatoes have also had low yields due to climatic changes.
Mr. Richard Kimeze, the Chairperson for Mawa Market Vendors told our reporter that the prices of Irish potatoes and matooke could have increased because they are currently being imported from Kabale, Kyenjojo and Kabarole districts.
He also revealed that a sack of imported Irish potatoes from the mentioned areas costs shillings 320,000, something he said affects their business operations.
Some traders reported that they were forced to hike the prices of Irish potatoes due to the high costs incurred while importing their merchandise.
