The Kasese Chief Magistrate’s Court has today remanded 84 people on suspicion of attacking police and military installations across the Rwenzori Sub-region on November 01, 2025 to Mubuku Government Prison until December 23, 2025.
The suspects were brought before the Kasese Chief Magistrate, George Mfitundinda and charged with treason, murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, terrorism financing and trafficking in humans among others.
Court heard that in the wee hours of Saturday, November 01, 2025, while in different areas in Kasese town, Rugendabara – Kikongo Town Council, Bundibugyo and Fort-portal Tourism City among other places, the suspects carried coordinated attacks on security installations while armed with pangas and catapults.
Today morning, over 80 suspects appeared before the Kasese Chief Magistrate where the charges were read to them but were not given chance to take plea.
His Worship Mfitundinda said between 2024 and November 01, 2025 while at diverse places of Kabarole, Kitagwenda, Bundibugyo, Bunyangabu, Kasese, Ntoroko and Kagadi, Josephine Biira alias Nyabahasa and 83 others contrived a plot to overturn the government of Uganda as by law established by force of arms and overt acts such attacking police barracks, robbing arms and ammunitions among others hence translating to treason.
The Magistrate then denied them to take plea, arguing that his court does not have the jurisdiction to try them and remanded them to Mubuku Government Prison.
However, Counsel Luke Kanyonyi from Kanyonyi and Co. Advocates who is the Defence Lawyer to one of the suspects (A60) prayed to court to grant permission to his client to access specialized medication since he was appearing sickly.
He also prayed to court to grant permission to the relatives of the accused persons to access them, saying none of them has been accessed since the time of arrest.
Meanwhile, Counsel Barnabas Tinkasimire from Victoria and Co. Advocates who also doubles as the area Member of Parliament for Buyaga West Constituency in Kagadi District who is a defence lawyer to some of his constituents, told the press shortly after the court session that he was not happy with the security operatives for incarcerating the suspects beyond the required time without producing them to the court of law.
