Save the Children in Uganda has pledged to support activities aimed at mitigating the impact of floods caused by River Nyamwamba and raising awareness among the victims that are mostly affected by the floods.
Since 2013, River Nyamwamba has continuously flooded, destroying property and sometimes leading to loss of lives.
Addressing the different stakeholders today during a meeting that was held at Nyamwamba Division Council Hall, the Non-governmental Organization made a pledge, stressing the importance of the residents’ understanding of the weather changes in order to reduce some disaster risks.
Officials from Save the Children said that over the years, Kasese District has been hit by repeated floods from River Nyamwamba, leading to loss of lives of human beings and animals, crop destruction and displacement of people.
Mr. Abdul Magezi, the Community Development Officer for Nyamwamba Division, explained that Save the Children had strengthened its partnership with the local authorities.
He said that the campaign focuses on helping residents to understand the scope of weather changes that often lead to threats of displacement and other effects.
Mr. Magezi commended Save the Children and the members of the District Disaster Management Committee for the partnership aimed at addressing the problem.
