High poverty levels among most communities in Kasese district have been cited as one of the major factors fueling domestic violence.
The local leaders, however, believe that that embracing hard work coupled with determination could help to solve the challenge.
The revelation was made yesterday at the official launch of the 2025 16 Days of Activism Campaign Against Gender Based Violence in Kasese District and Uganda at large. The event was held at Kasese District Multipurpose Hall in Nyamwamba Division of Kasese Municipality.
Addressing the gathering, the Kasese District Chief Administrative Officer, Paul Walakira, together with his Deputy, Eriab Begumya Ntarwete, emphasized the importance of hard work towards overcoming poverty.
The duo noted that through research, poverty was a major driver to domestic violence in communities and quickly urged the community members to work hard as well as being self -reliant by utilizing their fertile pieces of land positively.
Rev. Alice Nabirye who was among the organizers of the event, revealed that poverty often leads to stress and frustration that later boil over into violence, a reason why there was need to empower communities economically coupled with providing counselling and psycho-social support to the victims of domestic violence.
She subsequently warned the community members against the misuse of electronic devises especially while using social media. According to her, some people had started using social media through posting pictures of the naked people.
The Kisagazi Cell Chairperson, Christopher Mugenyi, urged the community members to take advantage of the existing government programs aimed at poverty reduction such as the Youth Livelihood Programme and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Programme.
