BY ABDALA MASEREKA

Internally displaced persons temporarily encamped at Nyambuko SDA Primary School in Ibanda – Kyanya Town Council, Kasese district have decried the poor conditions of living while in the camp.

Speaking to our reporter who had visited the camp today morning, the camp occupants cited the lack of sanitary pads to help them women especially those who experience their menstruation periods.

Mr. Saul Bwambale Mughunza, the Camp Chairperson revealed that the government needs to do an affirmative action for them, adding that at least 12 mothers have so far given birth from the camp but with no help from the professional midwives.

Mr. Timothy Sunday, a committee member revealed that they were facing a challenge of darkness especially during the night hours at the expense of expectant mothers who need help because most of them give birth late at night.

According to him, they avoid using candles for fear that they might burn the dry banana leaves and instead use torches found on their phones which do not produce enough light to be used while helping mothers to give birth.

Ms Constance Muhindo, a mother of 10 recounted the situation she went through while giving birth during the night hours while in the camp.

She said at that time, she didn’t have the requirements including gloves because they had been destroyed by the mudslides that befell the area on April 20, 2025, appealing to both the government and well-wishers to come to their rescue.
