The Kasese Municipality Mayor has revealed that roads equivalent to 36.8 kilometers have so far been graded and tarmacked in the urban centre under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development- USMID.
In January 2022, Kasese Municipal Council with funding from the World Bank received shillings 36 billion to work on a number of roads including Kitalikibi, 3rd street, Stanley street, Park rise, Margherita, Rwenzori and Bus circular. The contract was then awarded to China Railway 18th Bureau Group.
The same contractor was later given three more roads including Crescent, Rukidi and Portal in the first phase.
In the second phase, Kasese Municipal Council received another shillings 16 billion for the construction of Mboghoyabo and Mandela roads. The contract was awarded to Techno 3 Construction Co. Ltd under the supervision of FENCON Consulting Engineers Ltd.
While addressing the different stakeholders today morning during the 2024/2025 Financial Year Budget Conference for Kasese Municipality that was held at Kasese District Multipurpose hall in Kasese town, the Municipality Mayor, Chance Kahindo explained that of the 36.8 kilometers, 11.2 are in the Central Division while 26.6 kilometers are in Nyamwamba Division respectively.
The Municipality Boss also revealed that in addition to the USMID roads, his council has managed to gravel a number of community access roads including Kyababinga (3 kilometers), Majengo (1 Kilometer), Kemihoko (1 kilometer) all in the Divisions of Central and Nyamwamba respectively.
He, however, noted that the ongoing construction works on most roads has been affected by the current rains that have sometimes caused fresh floods, extreme soil erosion, and breaking of roads which according to him might delay their completion and subsequent handover.
On Health services, the Mayor told the stakeholders that the Government of Uganda is in the process of elevating Rukooki Health Centre IV to a district hospital and Railway Health Centre II to a Health Centre III among others.
About the status of Kilembe Mines Hospital, Kahindo explained that the facility was progressing well, adding that as council, they would continue allocating resources towards its stability so that it provides adequate services to the people living in the area.
