Political parties in Kasese ready to participate in the forthcoming local council elections

Some political parties in Kasese district have expressed readiness to participate in the forthcoming elections for the Village Chairpersons.

Recently, the Electoral Commission released a tentative road map for the Women and Youth Councils at village level, L. C I and II Chairpersons and according to the programme, the process is expected to begin early next month countrywide.

Some of the political parties that have disclosed their readiness to participate in the forthcoming village elections are the ruling NRM and opposition FDC and NUP and are internally devising means of getting suitable candidates to compete with their counterparts from the rest of the political parties.

Mr. Johnson Kamalha Kalyasa, the NRM Publicity Secretary for Kasese District disclosed that before the general village elections, they would first conduct an internal vetting to have flag bearers that would lead the party to success.

He appealed to the party members to cooperate as they look for people to hold the flags and reclaim the party victory.

Mr. Alfred Kule Ikwera, the Kasese District FDC General Secretary says they have arranged internal meetings from the village to the district levels as a way of preparing the members for the elections.

Asked if the current confusion within the party would not affect their mobilization, Ikwera noted that despite the two factions of Katonga and Najjanankumbi, the members would work together to have FDC take all the positions as per their Slogan of “One Uganda, One People.”

Mr. Bryans Basisa, the Kasese District NUP Chairperson says they are working tooth and nail to have people that would represent the party in the forthcoming election.

According to him, the party is currently building structures at grass root levels.

When contacted on phone, the Kasese District Returning Officer, Mr. Ismail Atujwikire Tukih declined to comment, arguing that they were still waiting for the National Launch so that he comes up with an official statement.
