South Rwenzori Diocese has declared every June to be a month of improving sanitation at both household levels and churches.
The month of June was declared and launched by the Diocesan Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Nason Baluku while officiating at the two-day 21st Diocesan Synod sitting at St. Paul’s Cathedral under the theme, “Life in its Fullness,” drawn from the Biblical Book of John 10:10.
The Bishop, however, said he had launched every month of June for improving sanitation at household level and churches for the next two years.
He argued that whereas sanitation caters for the provision of facilities and services for the safe disposal of human excreta, sewage and solid wastes, along with maintaining hygienic conditions to promote human health and environment, it is sad that many of the population’s homes and churches in Kasese District do not have primary disposals of wastes.
The Man of God said the month of June was important in the Anglican Church because the Christians celebrate the works of St. Peter and therefore it was very important for them to have time to support the community members and ensure that their surroundings are well for human living.
The Prelate pledged to practically join the members of the Fathers’ Union in digging pit latrines at selected homes.
He challenged the leaderships of some churches that no not have pit latrines to do so as early as possible, asking the Christians to borrow a leaf from Kyabikere in Ikobero Church of Uganda Parish and Mairo-Ikumi in Kinyamaseke Church of Uganda Parish respectively.
