Kasese District Local Government has launched the construction works of a more than shillings 599 million Katindo Suspension Foot Bridge in Ibanda-Kyanya Town Council, Busongora County North.
The construction of Katindo Suspension Foot Bridge aims at not only connecting the surrounding communities but also reducing the rate of drowning that takes place on River Mubuku.
The project follows community concerns over the rate of drowning on River Mubuku, affecting most of the farmers and learners who cross to the either sides as they go to their respective schools since the previous bridge was washed away by floods in May 2020.
The Kasese District Engineer, Ronald Asiimwe, yesterday explained to the community members during the launch that the district secured funding from the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) under their program, Local Climate Adaptive Facility (LoCAL).
According to Engineer Asiimwe, the bridge will only be used by the pedestrians and motorcyclists to transport goods to the markets and going to the essential places including health centers and schools.
Leaders in the area welcomed the project, noting that the lack of a bridge in the area had affected their development because there were impossibilities of accessing market places ever since the former bridge was washed away by the floods in 2020.
Modesto Bwambale Kanekerya, the outgoing Ibanda – Kyanya Town Council Chairperson and the Local Council I Chairperson of Katindo Cell, appreciated the ruling government for prioritizing capital projects in the area every financial year.
The Kasese District Chairperson, Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi, requested the people to always be positive to the government projects that are extended to them in their respective communities by surrendering some pieces of their land especially for road and bridge constructions.
The Kasese RDC, Lt. Joe Walusimbi, who officiated at the launch of the construction works, asked the people to embrace teamwork as they supervise the implementation of government projects in their communities.
The same team preceded to Hamkungu Parents’ Secondary School for the launch of the construction works of a kitchen valued at shillings 84 million.
