Dr. Kiyonga urges people to use pieces of land productively

BY MATHIUS KAHUNGU

The population in Bukonzo County West, Kasese District have been tipped about the need to properly use their pieces of land through the establishment of income generating projects in an attempt to avoid wastage and low productivity.

Dr. Chrispus Kiyonga, the area Member of Parliament -elect who also doubles as the Chancellor for Makerere University says he is concerned about a group of people who have established a brick making project in his area.

He, however, adds that such a group of people have hone an extra mile of using the fertile soils in coffee plantations, hence leaving the plants bare.

According to him, the continuity of such acts puts productivity of crops and yields at stake.

Dr. Kiyonga instead advises that such people should earmark specific pieces of land for brick making and leave the rest of the land for farming activities.

The Makerere University Chancellor also rallies the brick makers to conserve the fertile soils by embracing terracing and contour ploughing coupled with planting animal feeds along the terraces for income generation and poverty alleviation.

He also underscores the need for the animal farmers to add value to their livestock through applying artificial insemination, a move he suggests will help to improve on the quality and productivity.
