Farmers reminded about the need to grow high value crops in Kasese

BY MATHIUS KAHUNGU

Farmers in Nyakabingo sub-county, Busongora County South in Kasese district have been reminded about the need to adopt and embrace the growing of cocoa in an attempt to have an additional source of income.

The reminder was sounded today morning by Charles Thembo Kahitson, the Nyakabingo sub-county Chairperson while presiding over the supply of over 50,000 cocoa seedlings to the farmers at Nyakabingo Health Centre II.

The project that was first launched on September 01, 2025 is worth over shillings 90 million with funding from Megan Mitchell of Cactus and Jack’s Saloon and Grill from Colorado in United States of America and will leave over 150,000 cocoa seedlings given to the farmers in the lower local government.

Mr. Kahitson implored the farmers to seriously welcome the project, noting that its impact would see the residents become economically empowered in their respective families and subsequently curb cases related to domestic violence, especially those associated with poverty.

He also noted that once the cocoa plants are well maintained, they would help to prevent the prevalence of natural disasters like land and mudslides as well as helping in eliminating trees that are not nature friendly.

He, however, reiterated the need for the farmers to desist from the misuse of wealth got from the production of cash crops.

William Siine, one of the beneficiary farmers applauded the sub-county Chairperson for his lobbying capacity, revealing that once the crop starts yielding fruits, it would supplement his income and elevate him from the poverty line.

Augustine Octovia Nguru, the Nyakabingo Health Centre II in-charge used the same podium and implored the farmers to jealously guard the crop, urging that it would not only improve their wealth but also lead to the promotion of good health.
