Grief engulfed the residents of Kizungu Cell in the Scheme Ward of Nyamwamba Division of Kasese Municipality when they discovered a minor having downed in a water channel in the area.
Aged two and a half years, the minor identified as Joan Amumpire drowned in the water channel at around 1pm, dying instantly.
Ms Carolyn Ninsiima, the mother of the deceased’s minor told our reporter who had rushed to the scene after the incident that she left the child in the neighbourhood and went to the farm in Mubuku Irrigation Scheme but only to receive the sad news from the neighbors indicating that he child had drowned in the nearby water channel.
Ms Shamim Happy, a resident in the area who also doubles as the Chairperson for the people living with disabilities attributed the incident to the delay by government to redirect the water to the main channel of River Sebwe.
She argued that the channel that is located nearer the people’s houses has always caused havoc to them, asking government to urgently intervene into the matter.
Mr. Luke Tingasimire, the area Local Council I Chairperson who confirmed the incident, appealed to the parents to always watch their children’s footsteps in an attempt to curtail a repeat of a similar incident.
