Leaders long for solutions to unwanted pregnancies in Rwenzori region

A section of leaders from the Rwenzori sub region has appealed for lasting measures geared towards ending cases of unwanted pregnancies among the subjects of Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu.

The leaders suggest that empowering the young girls with the skills of making reusable sanitary pads and supporting the disadvantaged ones with scholastic materials as well as promoting health education would help to combat the vice.

Their advocacy comes at a time when Princess Ashley Shantale Angel Thusike Kibanzanga has initiated a program aimed at supporting the vulnerable girls across the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu with some necessities to enable them keep in schools.

Addressing her guests who had thronged the Kamaiba based Royal Palace in Kasese town shortly after receiving the sacrament of baptism at St. Paul’s Cathedral on Sunday, Princess Thusike stressed that she gets concerned whenever she sees young girls drop out of schools and end up getting unwanted pregnancies.

According to her, such young girls fall into victims because they lack basic necessities including sanitary pads, scholastic materials and health talks from either the parents or guardians.

The Rwenzururu Queen, Her Highness Agnes Ithungu Asiimawe reiterated that unwanted marriages and pregnancies are sometimes caused by domestic violence and poverty among families.

Hon. Sylvia Agaba, the District Councilor representing Central and Bulembia Divisions in Kasese Municipality revealed that Kasese was among the highly ranked district in registering cases of unwanted pregnancies in the country.

Hon. Josephine Baboona Babungyi, the Bundibugyo District Woman Member of Parliament regretted that the challenge of unwanted pregnancies was not only affecting Kasese but also other districts in the region.

She immediately pledged to offer four sewing machines that would be used in making reusable sanitary pads for the vulnerable girls in the Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu.
