The police in Kasese district, Rwenzori East policing region, have arrested two people on allegations of extorting an unspecified amount of money from members of the public using the names of security officers.

The suspects including Isaac Kamalha, a resident of Railway Ward in the Central Division of Kasese Municipality were arrested today afternoon and are detained at Kasese Central Police Station.

The Regional Community Liaisons Officer, SP Luke Mbusa confirmed the development to the press and revealed that Kamalha has been impersonating as the Gombolola Internal Security Officer (GISO) for the Central Division.

SP Mbusa however did not disclose the particulars of the second suspect who according to him has been impersonating as a member of the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence (CMI) in Kasese town.

He also stressed that the suspects had been familiar to some of the security operatives; a relationship he suspected could have made them confident to extort money from some members of the public.

Ms Enid Ninsiima, the GISO for the Central Division who is the major complainant in a case against Kamalha told the press that on Friday last week, the suspect illegally attended a workshop organized by Great Lakes Peace Centre at the Central Division Council Hall and signed on the attendance list in his name as a GISO.

She added that she was forced to cause Kamalha’s arrest because last year, he also allegedly signed forms of a section of people who were applying for the issuance of National Identity Cards.

The GISO also confided to our reporter that the suspect is also accused of reaching out to one of the schools in Kasese town and extorted money from one of the proprietors in the name of Kasese Resident District Commissioner.
