Salt miners in Kasese count losses following heavy rains

BY ISAAC MUMBERE

Salt miners in Lake Katwe – Kabatoro Town Council, Kasese district are counting losses following heavy rains that caused the Salt Lake to overflood and destroyed the salt pans.

Following the incident, a good number of youths have been left stranded since salt mining was their only economic activity.

When our reporter visited the area yesterday morning, the people involved in loading and offloading the mined salt had left their workplace and joined their families to do other activities than wasting time mining salt that has no market during the current rainy season.

Mr. Peter Businge, one of the residents and a salt miner says during the rainy season, the lake becomes deeper to a level that short people hardly do anything when it comes to mining salt.

According to him, most youth have abandoned the activity.

Mr. David Ssekanabo, another salt miner says the number people extracting salt from the lake has drastically reduced during the current rains compared to previous dry season.

Mr. Jimmy Agaba says as miners who used to work for people, they could earn between 20,000 – 30,000 on a weekly basis, arguing that they currently earn between 10,000 – 15,000 every week.

However, efforts to get a comment from the Katwe- Kabatoro Town Council leadership were futile by press time.
