People living along the Kamulikwizi Water Drainage Channel in Kasese Municipality have called for a permanent solution to the Nyamwamba River floods that have continuously caused destruction whenever they stray into the community.

The affected residents sounded the call today afternoon while meeting the Municipal leaders at the Mayor’s Gardens in Kasese town.

The victims, who expressed disappointment over the continuous flooding of the river, regretted the huge sums of money that government has been able to inject in the de-silting works of the river channel, however, lashed at the leaders for allegedly spending the funds on non pertinent areas in regard to solving the problem.

They thus appealed to the Municipal leadership to always cooperate and involve the local community in the process of finding a lasting solution to the problem of Nyamwamba River floods.

Earlier in her report, Ms Evelyn Mugume, the Kasese Municipal Environment Officer had indicated that over 9,989 people from 220 families were affected by the recent September 07 flood incident that also claimed the lives of two people.

She revealed that they were embarking on resurveying the Kamulikwizi Water Drainage Channel, asking the people living along the said canal to leave a space of 100 meters purposely for bamboo tree planting as a temporary measure of controlling Nyamwamba River floods from causing destruction to property including buildings.

In his remarks, Mr. Chance Kahindo, the Municipality openly told the victims that as government looks forward to finding a lasting solution to the problem of Nyamwamba River floods, the people living along the Kamulikwizi Water Drainage Channel should start thinking of relocating to safer places before they are forcefully evacuated.

According to him, whoever would not heed to the directive would automatically be taken to the courts of law to answer charges that would have been preferred to them accordingly.
