Parents urged to promote menstrual hygiene among girl-children

Parents and Teachers in Kasese District have been urged to take a proactive role in promoting menstrual hygiene awareness among the young girls as a way of preventingdiseases associated with poor hygiene practices.

The advice was made by the Kasese District Senior Health Educator Ms Agnes Mbambu during a sensitization session of over seven learning institution organised by SarangetiEnergy and held at Kilembe Secondary School in Bulembia Division of Kasese Municipality.

The session was organized under the theme, “Manage Your Periods with Confidence.”Mbambu, who described menstruation as a natural and part of life of a girl-child, said it could a major challenge for girls if not managed properly.

According to her, parents and teachers need to break the silence and stigma surrounding menstruation and ensure that the girls have access to accurate information and resources.

William Bwambale Muthahinga, the Kasese District Community Development Officer,linkedthe poor menstrual hygiene practices to increased risks of infections, absenteeism and drop-out rates among girl-children.

Rev. Charles Bikanja, the Vicar at Kyanzuki Church of Uganda Parish, emphasized the need for the parents and teachers to create a conducive environment for the girls to feel comfortable while discussing issues related to menstruation and seeking help when required.

The training attracted a number of schools including

Masule, Kyambogho, Bright Shine, Kyanzuki, Bulembia, Katiri Primary Schools and Kilembe Secondary School. ENDS
