Leaders in Kasese district have urged both government and non- governmental organizations to think of putting in place long term solutions to disasters that have continuously affected the society.
The disasters that are commonly experienced in the district include floods and landslides that have for long caused havoc to various communities.
They argue that other long term solutions to the effects of climate change are worth venturing in delivering relief items to the people after losing their relatives and property.
They sounded this yesterday when Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG) which is a faith based organization of all Pentecostal churches in Uganda was delivering a series of relief items to the 16 households that were affected by the recent mudslides in Mapata village of Bugoye Sub- County in Busongora County North.
The Kasese District Chairperson, Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi noted that it was prudent for the government and other organizations to dream for long term measures of containing the effects of climate change.
However, he called upon all religious leaders to spearhead sensitization programs within the people living in areas prone to disasters to evacuate to safer places.
James Katalikawe Muthulhanda, the Bugoye Sub- County Chairperson asked government to always quickly respond to the effects of disasters especially those having economic implications including reopening of destroyed roads to enable easy movement.
While addressing the media, Dr. Bishop Franco Onaga, the General Secretary for Pentecostal Churches of Uganda urged people living in areas prone to disaster to desist from constructing in identifiable water ways.
Each of the affected families was given 16 pieces of iron sheets, four-inch mattresses, scholastic materials, and food stuffs among others given out by Pentecostal Assemblies of God (PAG) as an expression of love to the mudslides victims.
Merozolina Ithungu and other victims commended Pentecostal Assemblies of God for their support to victims who are almost losing hope.
