The Inter-religious Council of Uganda – Rwenzori Region has applauded government for providing security to a section of residents claiming ownership of the different disputed pieces of land in Kasese district.
The victims who are from Nkoko village, Ibuga Kisanga village in Kitswamba Sub-county, Kabukero in Karusandara sub-county, Kirembe in Kasese Municipality and Rwehingo in Nyakiyumbu sub-county among other areas are currently encamped at the RDC’s office protesting the alleged government’s delay to resolve the challenges surrounding their resettlement. They started arriving at the RDC’s office in Kasese town on May 21, 2025.
Today morning, Rev. Ezra Mukonzo Yongeza, the Coordinator for the Inter-religious Council of Uganda in-charge of Rwenzori Region visited the victims, sympathized with them and donated 50 kilograms of maize flour and 10 kilograms of sugar to them.
He, however, asked them to avoid hate speech while in the camp that has collected over 3,000 people from different cultures.
The Man of God, who commended government for her efforts towards resettling them, quickly advised them to employ polite means of claiming their pieces of land.
Ms Grace Biira, the Group’s Chairperson, who appreciated the words of encouragement from the Church Minister, revealed that they were worried about the people’s health, adding that their numbers were increasing day by day.
She stressed that in 11 days they have so far spent in the camp, government has not donated to them relief food yet the camp currently house over 3,000 people.
Mr. Wilson Bitamazire Mijumbi Amooti, the Chairperson for the Banyabindi Community, appreciated the counselling session from the church leader, saying it had restored their hopes as they wait for an official communication from Kampala regarding their resettlement.
