Female students in the Rwenzori sub-region have been encouraged to pursue science related careers in an attempt to bridge the gender gap existing in the energy sector.

The encouragement was sounded today by Jona Rwabyomire Kakyima, a Board member of the Electricity Regulatory Authority while officiating at the Women in Energy Programme, an event that was held at Kasese Secondary School in Kasese town.

The event which was organized by the Electricity Regulatory Authority was attended by participants from a number of secondary schools including Bwera, St. Theresa Girls, Nyakatonzi Seed, Saad Memorial, Kuruhe, Rwimi and Kibito.

It was aimed at giving career guidance to the girls on how best they can take up science related courses and excel.

Ms. Kakyima observed the need for the learners to have a vision of why they are in school.

Hon. Winfred Kiiza Nyabahasa, the former Leader of Opposition who also doubles as the Director of the Winnie Kiiza Foundation, a development partner of the Electricity Regulatory Authority asked the learners to have passion for education as a tool that could lead them to excellence.

Mr. Joseph Nzukwa, the Head teacher at Kasese Secondary School implored the learners embrace environmental conservation and agriculture as one of the science related courses.

Some of the participants described the career guidance session as timely.
