Kasese District Local Government has revealed plans to reinstate the services of road gangs to help in doing routine road maintenance of infrastructures across the district.
The services of the said road gangs are expected to begin with effect from next month.
Their services had been suspended by the government over allegations that they were not doing work across the country. However, their services will be reinstated after negotiations between the District Chairpersons across the entire country and the Central Government.
The Kasese District Chairperson, Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi says that the road gangs will work on all the roads approximated at 500 kilometres spread across all the 44 Lower Local Governments that make up the Local Government.
Speaking to the press today morning in Kasese town, Muhindi, however, stressed that they were currently signing contracts with the people willing to take up the responsibility so that they begin the works as soon as possible since some roads now in a sorry state.
He appealed to the local leaders and leaders of the various political parties to supervise the people who would be awarded contracts so that they ensure value for the money that would be paid to them by the government.
The District Boss, however, regretted that the terrain and weather conditions of Kasese, arguing that the sometimes affect the durability of the infrastructure.
He therefore observed the need for the local population to plant trees as well as stopping the diversion of running water into the roads.
Meanwhile, Karim Baluku Kisembo, the Secretary for Works and Technical Services highlighted that the department was progressing well especially in this five-year political term.
He explained that they had received shillings 250 million for marruming Kitswamba -Maliba road and completing Isango -Bulemera road in Bukonzo West.
Kisembo revealed that despite the progress registered in the department, they were still working hard to ensure that some of the community access roads are taken up by the Central Government so that they are maintained routinely.
