The Kasese District Council has earmarked a 6.2-acre piece of land on which it will establish a parking yard of the heavy transit vehicles destined for the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The act is being done in an attempt to minimize the rate of road accidents that have been caused as a result of the traffic jam created before the said vehicles are cleared to cross the Mpondwe border.

The motion was moved by Sharon Musoki, the Secretary for Finance, Planning and Administration during a council sitting that was held on Tuesday.

Musoki revealed that the District Executive Committee thought it wise to utilize to piece of land that had formerly been used for holding cattle in Isango Sub-county.

She noted that they were working hand in hand with the leadership of Isango Sub-county because the council of the Lower Local Government had already made a resolution permitting the district to utilize the space for parking vehicles so that they are curtailed from being congested at the border before they are cleared for crossing to the DRC.

According to her, the jam created by the heavy trucks has been leading to road accidents because they block the roads and people’s crossing points.

The motion was seconded by Ronald Ndyakurungi, the District Councilor representing Kyarumba Town Council. Ndyakurungi said council would not have any objections because the members were witnessing accidents taking place at the border due to the traffic jam.

The Kasese District Chief Administrative Officer, Edward Kasagara, concurred with the councilors, noting that despite the congestion caused by the transit vehicles, they would also hinder the ongoing construction works of Kikorongo –Mpondwe road.

However, the CAO indicated that they would first have several engagements with the leadership of Isango Sub-county and Mpondwe – Lhubiriha Town Council, and the security agencies to devise means of implementing the resolution as well as clearing the site to serve the noble cause.

The Kasese District Chairperson, Eliphaz Muhindi Bukombi, had earlier noted that the security committee had written to them, expressing concern over the jam caused by vehicles at the border, appreciating the council for gracing the decision of the Executive Committee.
