Farmers discouraged from planting crops despite the July rains

BY MATHIUS KAHUNGU

Farmers in Kasese district have been discouraged from planting new crops despite the prevailing July rains.

The discouragement was sounded yesterday morning by the Kasese District Senior Agricultural Officer, Mr. Johnson Mwesige Sabuni while speaking to Messiah radio in an exclave interview at his office in Rukoki.

Mr. Sabuni disclosed that the current rains were resulting from the effects of climate change and are not suitable for early planting.

According to him, the sunshine is still anticipated in a period of two weeks as indicated by the weather forecast from the Uganda National Meteorological Authority(UNMA).

Mr. Sabuni asked the farmers to use this period to prepare their gardens for the next planting season that is expected to commence in Mid- Augustine.

Mr. Sabuni asked farmers to utilize the current weather to prepare for the next season which is expected to commence in mid August.

The agriculturalist, however, encouraged the farmers to plant their crops at the onset of the rains, warning that late planting attracts pests as well as theloss of some natural nutrients from the soil.

He also asked the farmers to follow the guidance from the agricultural officers and extension workers in order to realize higher yields.
