Residents of Bwenanule – Kinyabakazi Cell in Muhokya Town Council, Busongora County South in Kasese district have expressed fear that the ongoing exercise of updating the National Voters’ Register might not cover the exact number of legible voters in the area.
The residents accuse the people who were employed by the Electoral Commission to carry out the exercise of alleged absenteeism from the update station in the area.
The exercise started on January 20, 2025 countrywide in preparation for the 2025- 2026 General Elections.
The 20- day exercise is being conducted at the update stations in each parish throughout the country every day, including weekends.
According to the program, the exercise will see eligible citizens registered while registered voters wishing to transfer to new voting locations will be able to apply for such transfers and the registration details of the voters will be confirmed, among other activities.
However, Mr. Nelson Masereka, a resident of Bwenanule alleges that they only saw the people who were employed by the Electoral Commission to carry out the exercise in the area on the first three days and later disappeared.
According to him, for the last two weeks, some people have been coming to update their particulars but to their surprise none of the responsible officers is found at the update centre.
Ms Dulisi Mbambu, an NRM cadre in the area reports that when their party register was being updated, they didn’t get any challenges, wondering why the Electoral Commission had not rectified the issue of not being attended to.
Lawrence Bwambale, the area L. C I Chairperson says the over 350 voters at Bwenanule Polling Station who majorly hail from the cells of Kinyabakazi, Bwenanule and Kahendero are stuck on the next course of action.
However, the Kasese District Election Administrator, Ismeail Atwijukire Takih says he is not aware about the matter.
