Authorities in Bulembia Division of Kasese Municipality are worried about the increasing number of young mothers residing in some camps belonging to Kilembe Mines Limited.
Mr. Abdul Magezi, the Bulembia Division Community Development Officer says the availability of rooms for rent at cheaper prices in the camps has forced many people to stay in the area.
According to him, because the area has become densely populated, young girls have taken it as an advantage to engage themselves in sexual activities and subsequently become pregnant.
The Community Development Officer also stresses that the division is currently grappling with a surge in defilement cases, adding that his office with the help of police has continuously forwarded many defilement cases to the courts of law.
He, however, says they are betrayed by a section of parents who according to him secretly negotiate defilement cases with perpetrators in an attempt to get money from them.
Mr. Magezi has since called upon the parents to join hands and report the perpetrators to the concerned authorities if the vice is to be eradicated from the community.
Recently, the Senior Community Development Officer for Kasese revealed that the district stands at 34% in terms of Gender Based Violence cases committed against women and girls.
